A Look At The Blackberry Torch

By Mark Walters

The Blackberry Torch is the latest Blackberry handset to hit the international market. Being branded by RIM as the best Blackberry ever; a bold statement and one that has come under some scrutiny based on its specifications. Still, great mobiles phones tend to amount to more than the sum of their parts, so that is what we are going to find out in this article.

In terms of its specifications, the Torch can quite easily say it is the best ever Blackberry, as it offers many more features than all previous models. The Torch comes with 4 gigabytes internal storage capacity with a 4 gigabyte MicroSD included in the box, a 3.2 inch LCD touchscreen display, a full QWERTY keyboard, a 5 megapixel camera and WiFi capability; all engineered to work on the brand new 6th generation Blackberry OS.

What makes the Torch stand out from the rest of the Blackberry bunch is its sleek slide design, its enhanced social networking ability, utilizing in-built applications, and its usability. The latest incarnation of the Blackberry software, version 6, is not a complete overhaul, as some previous fans requested, but more of a fine tweak of the settings to further improve the performance and efficiency of the handset. The keyboard is also one of the best you can buy on any phone. One thing that the Torch can do better than almost any other phone is multitasking. Switching applications in the OS is a joy; just press and hold the menu button and select which application you desire from the running programs list - simple.

The Torch has come under heavy fire from critics claiming that it was outdated before it was even released with the processor speeds of the competing iPhone being nearly twice as fast in terms of clock speeds and the incomplete touch integration, not to mention the lower resolution and smaller display.

There are many people in this world that buy phones based on the brand name alone. With these particular people, it is not about the functionality, it is about the look. If you are one of these people then the Blackberry Torch is probably right for you. It is new, it looks good and it is a phone with a nice name. Other than those points, it does not have a lot going for it when compared to the competition. So, if you are not controlled by fashion, stay away. It seems that all the promise that RIM gave the public about the new direction, the new outlook, a new generation of handsets for a wider audience just boiled down to a diluted experience with a handset that looks good but performs poorly compared to its competitors.
