By Ashish Gupta

The application software, more popularly known as "apps" is software that is designed to help users perform specific tasks, single or multiple linked. These applications help solve real world problems. Some common examples of software applications include business software, accounting software, office suites, computer games, graphics and multimedia players.

The application program is however different from operating system software and middleware. These manage and integrate the capabilities of a computer but do not directly apply them to perform tasks to benefit the user.

According to the function that the application is designed for, it can manipulate text, numbers, graphics, or even all these elements at the same time. Some programs provide computing power by focusing on one task like word processing, while others offer a little less power but include several applications simultaneously. These applications are called integrated software.

There is a wide range of software available. An application suite has a number of applications which are combined and may have related functions, features and user interfaces. These applications can also have the ability to interact with each other.

Often business applications are available in suites like Microsoft office, OpenOffice.org. These applications bundle together a word processor, spreadsheet, etc. there are also application suites available for other purposes like for graphics or music.

Enterprise software is the kind of software that addresses the needs of organizational processes and data flow. The services provided by such apps are typically business-oriented and perform functions like online shopping, bill payments, security, and other such services.

Content access software is very popular and is used to access the content without the ability to change it. It may also contain software that allows editing of content. Such software gives users access to digital entertainment and published digital content. Examples of such software are media players, web browsers and games.

Educational applications are related to content access software but the content within these apps is adapted for use by educators and students. Such software may be analytical and can also be referential.

Mobile applications are the kind of applications that run on hand-held devices like mobile phones, personal digital assistants and enterprise digital assistants. These applications are very popular these days and come in a wide variety of types.

The most common applications that are used today are those of social networking sites. These let users use these websites even on the go. There are mobile applications that allow users to listen to radio stations, edit music and even learn music. There are also many business related applications that allow users access to the stock markets. Gaming applications are definitely popular along with all of these.
